The board builds the mind. The training floor builds the rest.
Fitness did not replace chess. It completed it. The same discipline that holds a position for five hours in a classical game is the discipline that designs a training programme and takes responsibility for another person’s physical development. These are not two different people. They are one person with an expanded range.

The Coaches Behind Me
The Coaches Behind Me
Swim Coach
Martin
Martin hasn’t been a swim coach for long, but the experiences he has given me are lifelong. By trusting me to start my career as a fitness coach, he played a bigger role in my journey than he probably realises. In many ways, he is indirectly responsible for my open water results — his constant motivation pushed me further than I expected, and his genuine care for the long-term development of athletes shaped how I understand physical performance. I am lucky our paths crossed.
Fitness Instructor
Jiho
Jiho’s contribution to my journey is as practical as it gets. Nearly four years, from 120 kg down to 88 kg. Every kilogram shed, he was there, and in a big way, he gave me the fitness foundation I stand on today. His instruction in functional training, movement quality, and programme design is directly reflected in the certifications I have since earned and in every programme I have designed for others. He is not just a coach from my past — he continues to be my coach. He is, in every sense of the word, an inspiration.
The Knowledge Formalised Four SIFA certifications earned across six months in 2025 — Personal Trainer EQF Level 4, Fitness Instructor, Suspended Training, Functional Training Specialist. The Qatar Ministry of Sports licence (SALA-000341) registered. The mentorship became a qualification.

Fitness Instructor Assistant — Paralympic Swimming
Kerim designed and delivered conditioning programmes for Shamil, a Paralympic swimming athlete preparing for international competition — collaborating directly with the National Paralympic Coach on adaptive, evidence-based training. Age 15. While competing internationally in open water and chess. This is what commitment to another person’s development looks like before you have a medical degree.
The Motto on the Training Floor
What Calculate. Commit. Continue. looks like in a gym
Calculate
Evidence-based programme design. Every training programme designed for a client — including a Paralympic athlete — begins with an assessment, not an assumption. Load progression, movement quality, recovery windows, adaptive capacity. The same analytical discipline that reads a chess position reads a client’s biomechanics. Calculation before prescription, always.
Commit
Dual-sport load. No exceptions. Earning four fitness certifications across six months while training for international open water competitions and chess tournaments is not a scheduling achievement — it is a statement about what commitment actually means. The 5am pool sessions happened. The certification coursework happened. The chess training happened. Simultaneously. That is the only kind of commitment that produces results across multiple domains.
Continue
From student to practitioner — without stopping either. Receiving coaching from Martin and Jiho, formalising it into credentials, immediately deploying it to support Shamil — all while pursuing international competition — is Continue as a professional philosophy. You do not wait until you have everything before you begin giving back. You give back with what you have, and build the rest as you go.
“You cannot train someone else’s body without beginning to understand it. That understanding is where medicine starts.“
The Pathway → Medicine
The fitness certifications are not a detour from medicine. They are the earliest expression of it. Designing training programmes for a Paralympic athlete at 15 — studying their adaptive capacity, tracking their load, collaborating with a national coach — is applied human physiology before the degree begins. The Borlaug scholarship addressed food security and health governance. The open water titles demonstrate what a body is capable of under sustained stress. The coaching work demonstrates what it means to take responsibility for someone else’s physical wellbeing. These are not extracurricular activities. They are the argument.
